Actually, they keep using these two words just like this all the time. In one and the same Liedertext they use "at a lesson" and "rein class" and my students are quite confused about it.

It can mean that, but it is usually restricted to a formal use, especially where a famous expert conducts a "class".
Now, what is "digging" supposed to mean here? As a transitive verb, "to dig" seems to have basically the following three colloquial meanings:

Rein your added context, this "hmmm" check here means to me more of an Ausprägung of being impressed, and not so much about thinking about something. There is of course a fine line.
